As many as 283 candidates are contesting on 35 seats that go to poll today in the last of eight-phase assembly election in West Bengal.
NEW DELHI: Polling began at 7 am on Thursday for 35 seats in the eighth phase of the assembly elections in West Bengal amid the rampaging second wave of Covid-19.
Long queues were seen outside most polling booths since early morning, raising concern over the spread of the infection even as the Election Commission said that all precautionary measures are in place.
The state registered its highest single-day spike of 17,207 Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, while 77 more people succumbed to the disease.
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even though the official announcement of the various exit polls done especially by TV channels in Kerala will be officially out on Thursday after 7 pm, the preliminary indications say the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left government stands a good chance to create electoral history by becoming the first government to retain power.
Though the results of the exit polls have unofficially started to trickle out and is not looking good for the Congress-led Opposition, they continue to portray a sense of confidence that no such polls done so far have been correct.
Kerala went to the polls on April 6 to elect 140 legislators and counting will take place on Sunday.

President Joe Biden will use his first address to Congress Wednesday evening to draw attention to the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill as supporters of former President Donald Trump protested the 2020 election.
The president will describe the riot as “the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War” according to advance excerpts released by the White House to reporters.
Biden will also say he inherited the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression and the worst medical pandemic in a century with the coronavirus, and he successfully turned the country from the brink.
“Now after just 100 days I can report to the nation: America is on the move again. Turning peril into possibility. Crisis into opportunity. Setback into strength,” Biden will say.
âMadame Speaker, Madame Vice President,â Biden began his speech, gesturing to the women behind him. âNo president has ever said those words from this podium, and itâs about time.â
